Counsellor & Therapist
Counselling and listening to others is part of who I am. As a young person I was not sure of my dream for my life but I often supported friends and family through tough times by listening with compassion and providing a supportive presence.
Building the foundations
My first job took me into the world of Architecture where I learned the importance of a good foundation and structure for whatever it is we want to achieve in life. I find this so relevant in the counselling room.
I also worked for some time in the Interior design realm where listening to the needs of clients and understanding what they required in their physical space gave me an understanding of how environmental conditions can help in facilitating people’s internal world.
Body and Mind
After many years in this field I began to study what had started as a personal passion for me, and trained as an Iyengar Yoga Teacher. This study and practice continues today and helps me appreciate the connection between body and mind. To support and extend this interest I undertook Counselling and Psychotherapy training. I gained my Graduate Diploma in Counselling at the Institute of Counselling and my Masters of Clinical Counselling from the Australian Catholic University.
During this time I worked for two volunteer organisations, one working as a mentor to Carers of Palliative family members or friends, and the other as a counsellor for people in difficult circumstances who would otherwise be unable to access long term counselling.
My path into the field of Therapy has been varied and I have gained great life experience through different perspectives which underpins the way I work as a therapist. I have worked with people dealing with anxiety and stress, relationship difficulties and chronic grief and bereavement.
Understanding life experiences (past and present)
Through my study of the human condition and my personal experience of therapy, I believe in the power of communication to bring understanding to our life experiences (past and present). Even when things seem unclear, overwhelming and uncertain, within a supportive and non-judgemental therapeutic relationship, the future can be seen for the potential and fulfilment it holds.
